Tewkesbury and Winchcombe
A wet start to the day. We visited Prinknash Abbey, very modern building. Went to pottery shop and walled garden, very unusual, probably Elizabethan. Then visited Witcombe Roman Villa, quite exquisite site, buildings not open, pavement inside bldg. Had lunch in caravan. Saw some cowslips on way to villa - very pretty! After lunch we went to Tewkesbury Abbey Church - St. Mary’s to be absolutely precise (Chris’s words, not mine!). Very impressive, High Despenset - standard bearer to the Black Prince is buried, the ‘Kneeling Knight’ Figure. A lot happened to the Abbey, including spire collapsing in 1559, several fires, and the Duke of Clarence + wife is buried there. Saw the first Baptist Chapel (no, should be Old Baptist Chapel), constructed in 15th as a 3-Bayed Hall House. The battle of Tewkesbury was fought in Bloody Meadows, but we didn’t go and find it. We went to Hailes Abbey (not Trust) which is a ruin, but interesting site - Chris took photo of boss, depicting Christ as Samson wrestling with lion. Stopped at Winchcombe after going to a Neolithic borrow called Belas Knap, only Chris & Maxine ventured up muddy track for 1km. Winchcombe evoked memories of 35 years ago approx. when Bill & I mended a puncture in ladies loo - i.e. motorbike - Bill eventually finished mending bike outside bank next to stocks. Ended up in the Air Balloon to eat. A good day, but cold & a bit wet.
