Winston Churchill's Chartwell
Woke up to another fine sunny morning which continued for the rest of the day. Did some washing. Discussed where to go. Decided on Chartwell, the home of Winston Churchill. We were going to stop at Sevenoaks, but didn’t. We sort of meandered around the countryside in roughly the right direction, but eventually got on the right road. I liked the drive, the countryside is pretty with lots of wood areas, fields and exclusive houses, hidden away, amongst it all. The driving is selfish - I suppose that most of them aren’t aware that someone might just be coming in the opposite direction. The roads do tend to be curly and tree hidden, cut high hedges on each side of the road. It would be beautifully rural if not for the cars - I think everyone should be made to cycle! Winston Churchill knew a thing or two about retreats! He chose a beautiful area, with enormous grounds, but not too large. There are still black swans on the lake (or river - no, I think it’s a lake). Apparently W.C. liked black swans. It’s not a spectacular house from the outside, but as W.C. only paid £5000 for it, he made a good job of renovating it, doing some of the work himself, with the help of two small daughters! It’s a pleasant house, and obviously full of all his life in various wars, etc. He was the man of the moment for us during the war, we really depended on him to keep us all going. There was a very nice National Trust restaurant there, and a good Nat. Trust shop. The gardens held many botanical delights - and the roses were lovely. Coming back, Bill turned a corner sharply and damaged a plastic strip on the car!
