Getting lost in the woods
Cloudy start - but brighter than yesterday - turned warm and sunny later on. Waved goodbye to Bill, came back, cleaned caravan inside, washed up, and sat for a bit, finally decided to try the walk to Cromer. I set off and at a fork in the path, met two elderly people coming back as they had reached a sign saying Cromer was in the opposite direction. I looked at the path leading from the fork and thought it might be right - that was my first mistake! The couple told me to go on as they walked slowly, so I did. Eventually the path petered out, but I went on - my second mistake, as I soon found myself in a wood, with a field to the left, occupied by sheep, and defended by a very tight barbed wire fence. I kept near the fence but undergrowth, tree branches and rhododendron bushes forced me higher, as I was in danger of cutting bits of myself as I struggled to keep going - my third mistake. The ground was covered in brambles, long grasses, tangled and matted bushes & grasses and also it was uneven, full of rabbit holes and sloped steeply upwards in places. I found a fairly good stick which helped a bit. I kept thinking, I must not fall or I could injure myself enough to immobilise me. I began to feel a bit desperate, as no-one knew where I was! I stumbled on and after what seemed a lifetime, got to the end of the wood. I then had a long grass field to pass through, at the end of which was a church and churchyard, all barb-wired! I did find a place at the corner of the church where I could get through. I breathed a big sigh of relief, especially when I got to the main road, and I saw the road sign for Felbrigg Hall - I had a long walk back to the site, but at least I’d made it! I was very tired when I got back. Slept log-like! After I had visited the couple next door to say I was back!
