Lincoln and the cathedral
It rained all night and got very cold. I had to put my cardigan on to stop me shivering. It lessened by the time we got up and gradually cleaned. We decided to visit Lincoln, as there wasn’t much point in going towards the sea in view of the weather. It’s very flat country but has some pretty villages which are largely unspoilt. The rape fields are a bit hard in the eye, but they make the trees and hedges stand out well. There aren’t a lot of hedges of course, the land is just flat to the sea! When you get near Lincoln the cathedral can be seen for a long time before you reach the city. We visited the cathedral, and had a cup of tea there. We went in the shop and I bought John’s birthday present, one of the gargoyles from the misericords. It’s a monk squatting on his haunches - I don’t know what for! I walked down ‘Steep Hill’ and back again. I also visited the Bishop’s Palace, dates from 10-something - it’s a ruin of course, but National Heritage have done a good job in keeping it looking good. Bill went for a bus ride on a site-seeing tour. It already feels a bit cool, we shall have the fire on later no doubt. Well, this is the last day of our holiday, worse luck, so it’s back home tomorrow.
