Castelnaud at Beynac
We decided to go to St.Cyprien open market - quite interesting, all the main street is shut off. Had lunch there, then we went to Beynac which is very large, being restored, a lot there, involved with Richard Cœur de Lion, the Crusades and much else. Lovely views across the Dordogne plain to Castelnaud which was a rival to Beynac, and was English held for some centuries. We went to Castelnaud where Simon De Montfort took the cattle in 1214 and dismantled it. It’s got quite a few armaments, and a reconstructed stone machine for defending the castle against attack. It was reforged in 1463 by the French. It has an artillery tower and many other embellishments which were added in time. It started being restored 1967 - and they’ve done well! We were quite shattered by then, happy to get a meal and drink some wine!
